Classification by contact state

Steel wire rope can also be divided into point contact, line contact or surface contact according to the contact state between each layer of steel wire in the strand.

① Steel wire rope in point contact: the diameter of steel wire in the strand is the same. In order to make the steel wire bear uniform force, the spiral angle of each layer of steel wire after twisting is roughly equal, but the twisting distance is different, so the inner and outer layers of steel wires cross each other, in a point contact state.

② Wire rope in line contact: the screw pitch of each layer of steel wire in the strand is equal, and the inner and outer layers of steel wires are in contact with each other on a spiral line, in a line contact state. The performance of wire contact wire rope is much better than that of point contact wire rope, so it is widely used.

③ Surface contact steel wire rope: a kind of surface contact rope strand, the outer layer is made of special-shaped steel wire, with smooth surface and good wear resistance. Compared with other types of steel wire ropes with the same diameter, it has higher tensile strength and can withstand transverse pressure, but it has poor flexibility, complex process and high manufacturing cost. It is often used as a bearing rope, such as the cable on cable crane and aerial ropeway.
